Gibson Family Cleaners

Toronto, Ontario

About the brand

In 1929, master dyer Joseph Gibson opened a Toronto textile dye house — one that would be trusted to dye soldiers' uniforms through the Second World War and still be caring for the city's clothes nearly a century later. Four generations of the family have chosen, again and again, to keep the business rooted in the community that created it, through world wars, recessions and a pandemic. Gibson's Cleaners represents a kind of continuity almost no Canadian business achieves: the same trade, the same city, the same standard, for 96 years. Its longevity isn't nostalgia. Rather, it's an unbroken record of showing up. In an era of scale-or-die pressure, Gibson's proves that staying is its own growth strategy. It is living proof that a neighbourhood business can become a civic institution.
